Desecrated Landscapes: Nanga Parbat/Pakistan and Parvan Province/Afghanistan
June 29, 2009 by graupepillard
The latest series is about beauty and grandeur of the landscape vs the history of the place. Nanga Parbat means naked mountain as is located in the Northwestern Areas of Pakistan where there are many Taliban in hiding. Known as the "Killer Mountain", Nanga Parbat was one of the deadliest for climbers in the first half of the twentieth century; since that time it has been less so, though still an extremely serious climb. It is also an immense, dramatic peak that rises far above its surrounding terrain. I became interested this past year (after seeing photos of Afghanistan and Pakistan) in painting landscapes which are people-less but filled with human history and tragedy.

Watching/Mourning

Watching the demonstrations in Iran on CNN. My facial response to the violence is illuminated by lights syncopated with the gunshots, screams and voices in the background. Flashes of lights blinking on and off was a wrenching reminder of emergency vehicles, bullets and a crown of thorns.
