In the opening scene of the 1980 movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy, an American pilot, flying over Africa’s Kalahari Desert – an unoccupied space, right? – tosses an empty Coke bottle out the window of his plane. It drops into the hands of a Kalahari Khoikhoi  (called Bushmen by Euroamericans) – whose community has never experienced mass production, let alone a Coca Cola bottle, a revered symbol of capitalism and modernity.
