Acting Together on the World Stage: A Conference on Theatre and Peace Building in Conflict Zones

Theatre Without Borders, hosted by La MaMa ETC and in affiliation with Coexistence at Brandeis University, will present  Acting Together on the World Stage: A Conference on Theatre and Peace Building in Conflict Zones in New York City from September 23-26, 2010.  This conference will bring together theatre and performance practitioners from around the world to share their experiences with the NYC-based theatre community and public.  

 

 Acting Together on the World Stage grew out of a 5-year initiative between Theatre Without Borders and the Coexistence programs at Brandeis University.  During the past years, Theatre Without Borders artists (www.theatrewithoutborders.com) have attended gatherings and explored, with the guidance of coexistence practitioners, a range of questions around the relationship between the arts and conflict transformation.  

 

The Conference will begin a year of effort to disseminate the documentation of world-wide experiences of artists working in conflict zones (before, during and in aftermath.)  There is an anthology and documentary film that will be revealed at the conference.  There is also a rich theoretical conversation about best practice that will lead to curriculum development for theatre and performance training programs.  The Conference public will include both artists/practitioners and peace builders (from the UN and governmental levels to grass-roots activists.)

 

We are excited to host artists from Serbia, Romania, Belarus, Rwanda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the Sudan, Iran, the West Bank, Israel, Peru, Cambodia, the U.S.A. and many other countries.   

Theatre Without Borders is a grass-roots non-organization, so we are building this conference thanks to the passion volunteerism of our fellow artists and colleagues, and with support from a wide variety of linking partners including 651 ARTS/Africa Exchange, Fordham University, the Romanian Cultural Institute of New York and others.
